Southern Methodist University built its new 45,000-square-foot tennis complex at Mockingbird Lane and Central Expressway in Dallas to house its top-ranked student tennis program. ATMAC Mechanical worked with Hunt Construction as the HVAC and plumbing contractor for the complex.

ATMAC technicians installed a Daikin variable air volume system along with mini-splits, four Valient rooftop units and a complete plumbing system for the six indoor court arena and training center.

Replacing the HVAC systems and bringing the plumbing up to current standards for a 70-year old historic building presents a whole range of challenges. Add to it, partial occupancy and serving as a medical teaching facility and you’ve got some serious planning to do.

In 1924 everything was smaller, including elevators and ceiling space. Installation of three 200-ton chillers meant cutting into concrete, taking apart new equipment and putting it back together, and finding innovative solutions to fit all new plumbing and electrical into small spaces, while figuring out how to install new med-gas piping and code-approved fire protection systems.
